Amazon Hit With Record Fine for Failing to Obtain Consent for Targeted Ads

Luxembourg Data Protection Authority Issues Decision

CNPD Confirms Decision Against Amazon Europe Core Sà rl

The Luxembourg National Commission for Data Protection (CNPD) has confirmed that it has issued a decision against Amazon Europe Core Sà rl, a Luxembourg-based subsidiary of Amazon. The decision relates to Amazon's use of targeted advertising without obtaining the necessary consent from users.

CNIL Imposed Fine in December 2020

The CNPD's decision follows a similar decision by the French data protection authority, the CNIL, in December 2020. The CNIL imposed a fine of 35 million euros on Amazon for violating the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The CNIL found that Amazon had failed to obtain valid consent from users for the use of their personal data for targeted advertising.

CNPD Confirms Fine

The CNPD's decision confirms the CNIL's finding that Amazon had violated the GDPR. The CNPD has not yet disclosed the amount of the fine that it has imposed on Amazon, but it is expected to be substantial.
